Mariana Markova

Mariana has over ten years of experience teaching English and social sciences to international students. She has worked as an English teacher in three countries - Russia, Bulgaria and the US. Before coming to Seattle to do a doctorate in Anthropology, she worked as project manager and researcher at major international organizations such as the UN, World Bank, and Doctors Without Borders. She has keen interest in world languages and cultures. Her hobbies are hiking, international movies and theater.

Courses Taught

American History and Culture through Film

Can you really substitute an English textbook with watching movies? The answer is “Yes!” In this integrated skills course, intermediate and advanced English learners will be provided the opportunity to practice a range of language skills: listening and speaking, reading and vocabulary, presentation and writing. Homework assignments will consist of viewing award-winning American documentary or feature films which will be discussed in class. Students will have the opportunity to explore critical thinking skills while being introduced to topics from American culture and history. Intermediate ESL Workshop - Speaking and Listening

This course is designed to help non-native speakers improve their North American English oral communication skills, accent and pronunciation. We will review and learn to use various grammatical forms and develop contextual conversation skills for use in everyday communication. Class sessions will consist of listening or watching video clips, class discussion, games and role play. Learn new vocabulary in context, work on pronunciation and deepen your knowledge of North American grammar. A $15 materials fee is due to the instructor on first day of class.
