Dan Tarker

Dan Tarker

Dan's writing experience includes five years as the literary associate/writer-in-residence for The Western Stage, a small regional theatre on California’s Central Coast. He holds an MFA in Creative Writing with an emphasis in Playwriting from San Francisco State University. In his off  time, Dan spends time with my family, writes plays, and leads a local playwriting group.

"The one-act playwriting class positively exceeded my expectations.  In the course of the quarter I completed two plays, a shorter one of 10 minutes and a longer one-act of approximately 25 minutes.  Both plays are currently in submission to competitions nation-wide. To have gotten that far in the space of 8 weeks is (for me) remarkable." – Stephen T.

“Dan is a dynamic teacher; he "knows his onions", condensing a torrent of insights into eight short meetings. He gets you writing, and when he hears your work read, he laughs out loud - in all of the appropriate places.” – Dan B.

“Dan Tarker's ‘Playwriting and the Art of the Short Play’ was a great way to explore the short form and work on the skills needed for longer works. Highly recommended.”- Scott S.

Courses Taught

Solo Performance Workshop

Ever wanted to write and perform your own solo show? This exciting course gives you the supportive creative space and guidance to do just that. We’ll read, watch and discuss a variety of one-person pieces and apply what we learn to develop and compose several short monologues, leading to a final public presentation at the end of class. Leave class with a deeper understanding of the different approaches to creating solo shows, how to develop a performance piece, and gain experience in both writing and performing for the theatre.
