The Films of Buster Keaton
Silent film legend Buster Keaton’s work was nearly forgotten after the “talkies” took over cinema. When Keaton’s films were rediscovered in the late 1950's, film connoisseurs found he was Chaplin's only serious rival among the masters of silent comedy. During his career, Keaton made 12 feature films and 19 two-reel comedies between 1920 and 1929. He was a natural comedian who never repeated or imitated himself. If he played a gag more than once, it was in order to improve on the original. He believed that humor was a very serious business and demonstrated a gift for getting a laugh without being too ridiculous. Films screened this quarter include some of Keaton’s early shorts and features including “Our Hospitality”, “Sherlock, Jr.”, and “The General”.
