The Dynamics of Trauma

Through lecture, discussion and group interaction, students will gain a greater understanding of the trauma continuum encompassing Acute Stress Disorder, PTSD, Complex PTSD and Disassociation. We will explore how trauma may manifest and discuss helpful or harmful approaches to intervention. Drawing from up-to-date information as well as data established from formal trauma studies over 100 years ago, students will gain insight into some of the most important dynamics of trauma. We will discuss short-term trauma experiences, long-term traumatization and the pros and cons of various techniques to support those impacted by trauma. We will examine "trauma-informed" practices and shape a practical, concrete definition of trauma and traumatization.
