This course will cover the basics of writing humor for an array of genres – including short stories, plays, film, and poems. Through close readings of influential and contemporary humorists, and plenty of in-class exercises, students will refine their comedic timing, plotting, and style. Students will also be asked to share their work with the class. Bring us your wacky quarantine adventures, your absurdist slam-poetry, your political satire! Definitely the best continuing education class I've taken. Nels was knowledgeable and confident in his presentation; it was clear he put a lot of thought into his prep for the course. The content was well-organized and accessible. He also gave really constructive, thorough feedback on our assignments, and that alone was worth the price of the class. It also helps that I wound up with a great group of fellow students (rarely the case), and it was a delight to spend a couple hours a week with them.
